The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has stepped in to address the growing concerns over the impounding of vehicle plate numbers belonging to students. This issue had caused tension among students, with many feeling unfairly targeted by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
To resolve the matter, a high-level meeting was held between the leadership of NANS and FRSC officials.
The meeting had in attendance: Comrade Lucky Emonefe – NANS National President, Dist. Senator Akinteye Babatunde (Babtee) – NANS Senate President, and Other top NANS executives.
Representing the FRSC was the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, alongside other senior officers.
Following the meeting, NANS National President Comrade Lucky Emonefe released an official statement. He reassured students that the issue had been resolved and that there would be no further harassment regarding plate numbers.
After a thorough discussion, both parties reached the following agreements:
1. FRSC to Stop Impounding Students’ Plate Numbers
The Corps Marshal assured NANS that the impounding of student vehicles over plate number issues would be stopped. He clarified that the enforcement was not meant to harass students but was part of general road compliance efforts.
2. Protection for NANS Official Vehicles
NANS made it clear that its official vehicles at the national, zonal, and state levels should not be treated as illegal. They emphasized that these vehicles are essential for student representation and movement.
3. Better Understanding and Communication
Both sides agreed that there should be better communication moving forward. If any issues arise, NANS and FRSC will engage in discussions instead of allowing misunderstandings to escalate.
4. Road Safety Awareness for Students
As part of the agreement, NANS will work with FRSC to educate students on road safety and traffic regulations. This will help prevent future conflicts and ensure that students drive safely and responsibly.
The statement Comrade Lucky Emonefe can be summarized to:
“This is a victory for Nigerian students. We engaged FRSC in dialogue, and we have reached a positive resolution. No student should be harassed over plate numbers again. We appreciate the FRSC for listening to our concerns, and we urge students to always abide by traffic regulations”.
This agreement is a major win for Nigerian students, showing that peaceful dialogue can lead to real change. NANS has once again proven its commitment to protecting students’ rights while maintaining a good relationship with national institutions.
Students are advised to report any further issues to NANS leadership while continuing to obey road laws. With this new understanding, both NANS and FRSC aim to work together for a safer and more student-friendly road environment.
